ChemMultimodal Saved Already 8448 t CO2 Emissions

13 September 2018, Linz

On 12 and 13 September, ChemMultimodal partners came together in Linz to discuss preliminary results and the successes of the pilot phase. Two month before finalisation of the project’s pilot phase the project partners have already achieved a reduction of 8.8448 t of transport related CO2 emissions of chemical goods. The project partners succeeded in involving in total 59 businesses, including chemical companies, logistics service providers and terminal operators, into the pilot activities. Thanks to pilot workshops and numerous bilateral consultations with companies, the partnership could identify 45 transport routes which have the potential for a shift from unimodal road transport to multimodal transport by combining road, short sea shipping and rail transports.  On seven identified and tested routes chemical transports could be successfully shifted from pure road transport to a multimodal transport solution. Further pilot tests were conducted on seven additional routes and the results are still under assessment by chemical companies. The realisation of further shifts could potentially lead even higher savings in CO2 emissions.

During the working group meeting, partners also discussed factors that are influencing companies in their decision to increase multimodal transport in their modal split. Apart from external factors such as prices and transport-related costs, partners concluded that in most cases the lack of awareness that multimodal transport could be an economically competitive option to 100% road transport is also a relevant factor. With the help of the pilot workshops organised during the pilot phase, the project could already contribute to raise awareness and to change the attitudes of companies towards multimodal transport solutions.

Moreover, partners discussed and peer reviewed the developed ChemMultimodal toolbox elements. As a result, several changes and ideas for improvements were exchanged. The toolbox will be revised according to the agreed improvements by the end of November.

On the second day of the partner meeting, the consortium focused mainstreaming the transnational strategy of the project and the development of action plans for the partner territories. The developed national and regional action plans will include measures how the pilot concept could be maintained after the project duration.
