EnvironmentAl integrated, multilevel knoWledge and approaches to counteract critical AIR pollution events, improving vulnerable citizens quality of life in Central Europe Functional Urban Areas
What is AWAIR
AWAIR aimed to define new indicators for air quality and to evaluate the effectiveness of measures applied during Severe Air Pollution Events (SAPEs), to achieve greater protection of the health of citizens, with a special focus on vulnerable and susceptible people. Communicating correctly to stakeholders and citizens was also among the main objectives.
AWAIR involved 7 partners and 5 associated partners from academia, research and municipalities across 5 countries. Four Functional Urban Areas (FUAs) were represented.
Relevant outputs
AWAIR has produced technical information on air quality measurements, parameters and indicators, and predictive tools, to estimate the effectiveness of the actions in case of SAPEs. There have been two pilot actions in Parma and Katowice. AWAIR has produced a transnational strategy for coordination of urban plans at FUA level decision support tools and guidelines for decision makers and public administrators. AWAIR has produced an app for mobiles and tablets, to implement communication with stakeholders and citizens.
Results of communication
The final result of the communication from AWAIR has been to increase the knowledge about air quality, to increase the awareness about the impacts of air quality on health, to prompt changes in attitudes and behaviour in citizens and stakeholders. The technical knowledge developed by AWAIR has been disseminated to scientists and users. The decision making tools has reached administrators and regulators. The main results have been widely spread to the general public through digital media, press, TV and meetings. Young people and children have been reached through schools and educators.
Reference points of the AWAIR strategy
AWAIR has worked in the EU context, having as reference the situation of EU countries, the EU legislation framework and the common environment we all share. However, the tools developed are amenable to translation and adaptation to other local communities.
