Organisation profile:

BKK Centre for Budapest Transport (BKK) is the integrated urban mobility managing authority in Budapest. Since 2010, BKK Centre for Budapest Transport is located between the local government and transport operators with Public Service Contract framework in the governance model. The Hungarian capital has a large road network (4500 km) with 1/3rd being a main road network. There are over 1000 traffic signalled intersections as well. Total length of public transport network is 3300 km with almost 2200 vehicles in operation daily. BKK is responsible for the BMT Budapest Mobility Plan, which is the first SUMP based mobility strategy of Budapest for the period 2014-2030. BMT is in line with the EU White Paper, the National Transport Strategy, and the Budapest 2030 Urban Development Concept. BMT contains a large number of measures related to the sustainable development of public transport. An important intervention area of BMT is the development of demand responsive transportation in less populated areas.

Region profile:

  • Urban agglomeration: Metropolitan region of Budapest (Hungary)
  • Area: 525 km2 (Municipality of Budapest) - 2.538 km2 (Metropolitan region)
  • Inhabitants: 1.700.000 (Municipality of Budapest) - 800.000 (Metropolitan region)
  • Population density: 3.238 inhabitants per km2 (Municipality of Budapest) - 315 inhabitants per km2 (Metropolitan region)

Role in the project:

BKK would like to share his experiences with the other project partners and learn from other good practices. PP7 in the SMACKER partnership is among "experienced" regions: they have a deep knowledge in the field but are planning anyway a step forward thanks to the transnational cooperation and the contribution of the academic partners. BKK will make a state of the art of the situation in Budapest and make an analysis regarding existing services and passengers’ needs. According to the results a plan will be made to revise existing services and to extend services to new areas. After gathering experiences from other project partners and examining different good practices, a web based application will be developed to better manage the existing DRT system and to possibly extend the service in order to influence rural area inhabitants to use more sustainable and greener transport modes.

Activities in the project:

Implementation of pilot action in Budapest and the metropolitan region:

  • improving the existing DRT system (BKK is operating 5 DRT lines in Budapest)
  • overview the available international examples
  • develop an application where booking and cancellations are available (today by phone only)
  • monitor the efficiency of the new system
  • investigate possible extension of DRT system in Budapest.
