NIJZ - Nacionalni Inštitut za Javno Zdravje (National Institute of Public Health) is a central national establishment with a main purpose to educate, protect and enhance the health of the population of the Republic of Slovenia by means of raising awareness and other preventive measures.
The beginnings of NIJZ stretch in 1923 when the Central Hygiene Institute was established in Ljubljana. In 90 years it took over an important role in health promotion and protection of Slovenian population. In 1992, National Institute of Public Health of the Republic of Slovenia (IVZ RS) was established, which formed a network of public health services providers together with 9 regional Institutes of Public Health. IVZ RS and regional institutes combined on 01/01/2014 into a one uniform National Institute of Public Health with one Central Unit and nine Regional Units.
While representing a central institution in the field of public health, NIJZ, with its 400 employees and numerous partners from various social sectors and non-governmental institutions, strives to fulfil its mission – contribute to better health and welfare of Slovenian population. Among the main NIJZ activities are the following:
Besides working in the abovementioned fields, NIJZ contributes to new solutions by participating in numerous international public health projects. By spreading new knowledge and best practices, it fulfils its role in the field of research, education and training public health professionals.

The role of NIJZ is participating in the development of methodology for the nationalvulnerability assessment and SWOT analysis in WP.T2. It will also provide thenecessary inputs for the Virtual Health Repository. NIJZ will elaborate the nationalvulnerability assessment and SWOT analyses, and contribute to compile thecomparative studies. Together with the other knowledge provider national public health authorities, it will actively participate in the compiling of the comparativeSWOT. NIJZ has also responsibility at project level to elaborate benchmarking theInAirQ project and collect the best practices from EU and overseas dealing withhuman health and air quality in schools. It will elaborate the national Indoor AirQuality Action Plan in collaboration with the project partner SNHPS. As “knowledge provider” it will actively contribute to Joint Transnational Strategy. NIJZ will organisethe 2nd WG meeting together the 3rd WG workshop.
