Stuttgart Region

Verband Region Stuttgart is the political entity for the Stuttgart Region which was founded in 1994 and is comprised of the city of Stuttgart and its five surrounding districts. It is home to 2.8 million inhabitants and unites 179 municipalities.

City of Stuttgart

The region has its own directly elected regional assembly enabling fast and effective decisions on regional issues. The mandatory tasks given to the region include key issues such as regional planning, regional public transport, regional transport planning, mobility management, landscape planning, business and tourism development.

Mobility exceeds the boundaries of one municipality and thus requires regional solutions. Being one of the global centres of the automotive industry, the region focuses on the effects and potentials of connected and automated vehicles as feeders for rail passenger transport, especially in rural areas. The main task will be to examine whether connected and automated on demand vehicles can be more cost-efficient and environmentally friendly than the current bus system.
