Interreg CENTRAL EUROPE has supported transnational cooperation in central Europe for more than 20 years.
Our European funding has helped regions and cities to become stronger and more resilient without reinventing the wheel. We helped to build trust beyond borders and connected the dots in the fields of innovation, low carbon, natural and cultural heritage as well as transport and mobility.
Now the time has come to take our successful cooperation forward. Together with our partners on the
national, regional and local level we want to make sure that in 2021-27 we can continue to proudly say that:
#cooperationiscentral for a better future
in our central European regions and cities

The Working Group Interreg CENTRAL EUROPE 2021-27 was established in June 2018 and formalised on 14 November 2019.
The group consists of delegates from all partner states as well as an observer from the European Commission. It is responsible for steering the drafting process of the new programme and chaired by the chair of the current Interreg CENTRAL EUROPE 2014-2020 monitoring committee. The drafting of the new programme as well as the accompanying strategic environmental assessment (SEA) will be supported by external experts. The managing authority and joint secretariat of the current programme will also contribute.
The new Interreg CENTRAL EUROPE Programme is currently planned to kick-off in summer 2021.
A first call for project proposals is expected to be launched soon after the programme start.
In September and October we carried out a survey among selected national thematic experts to collect inputs for the future programme strategy. The aim was to find out, in which thematic fields our partners perceive the highest needs for transnational cooperation to meet future challenges.
At the EU Week of Regions and Cities 2019, we hosted a participatory session, in which practitioners and policy makers shared their views and ideas on the future orientation of our programme. Inputs collected informed the territorial analysis.

In November we invited selected national thematic experts to discuss national strategic preferences and build consensus on future policy choices. We also used the workshop to collect initial inputs regarding potential topics, actions and target audiences.
In parallel to the survey, national contact points will organise partner dialogues to collect inputs. These events will allow for more in-depth discussions and help to collect more qualitative inputs in addition to the transnational survey.

In focus groups with overlapping transnational Interreg programmes and other key players like macro-regional strategies we will collect feedback and raise awareness on the strategic choices taken. This will also strengthen coordination among cooperation instruments in central Europe. Upon invitation only.
