TOB Webinar: Intermodal Transport in Poland – opportunity or challenge?
On 1 July 2020 the Webinar of Transport Research Observatory organised by the Centre for EU Transport Projects took place. This time, the main topic of the meeting was intermodal transport. Due to the epidemiological situation and sanitary restrictions, this was the second meeting organized online. It was attended by over 80 people - theoreticians and practitioners, representatives of central administration, scientific community, OPI&E beneficiaries and business.
The meeting was divided into two parts: the context of the opportunity and the context of the challenge. During the presentation and the 3 panels, the experts confirmed that the opportunities and challenges cannot be separated in intermodal transport. They also wondered what an opportunity for Poland intermodal transport is and what challenges does it present to all stakeholders. Thanks to the participation of the Port of Hamburg's representative, they could be compared to the challenges facing one of the largest ports in Europe.
As a transit country, Poland should be a transport route for both North-South and East-West traffic. Almost all of the transport corridors run through our country. The share of intermodal transport in the market is low in relation to the potential that Poland has, but currently we can observe an upward trend. In the course of the discussions, it was considered what to do to reinforce Polish intermodal transport. During the meeting there was also a discussion on how intermodal transport handled the situation during the COVID-19 epidemic.
One of the presentations were the conclusions of the TRANS TRITIA project on improving the coordination and planning of freight transport in the TRITIA area performed by Ms Aleksandra Krawucka, Project Manager.
Undoubtedly, an important part was also the discussion within the panel entitled Open question: A good programme to develop intermodal transport? During which the vision of a programme for the development of intermodal transport and the aspects that such a programme should include were discussed.
